Taking over tenancy of a Cornish pub | Royal Bank of Scotland

Couple enliven local life by taking over tenancy of Cornish pub

After working in the pub trade for over 14 years, Lucie Brightwell and Nathan Gibson decided the time was right to start their own business. When the chance to secure the leasehold of The Travellers Rest arose, they looked to NatWest to help them achieve their goal.

Having run both independent and Mitchells & Butlers chain pubs for several years, Lucie and Nathan decided to follow their dream of moving to the countryside, and they relocated to Cornwall in 2009. There they continued their careers as pub managers before hearing that the Travellers Rest in Trevarrian was on the market.

The pair had to act quickly and having just half the finance they needed to secure the leasehold they approached a number of banks for a funding solution, with no success. However, NatWest's local relationship manager, Darren Lewarne, had confidence in Lucie and Nathan’s ideas for the pub and attained the financing for them in less than a month, enabling them to secure the tenancy for The Travellers Rest from St Austell Brewery.

The Travellers Rest is now thriving under its new management, serving quality ales and good, wholesome British pub food made with locally sourced produce. Lucie and Nathan have also made a conscious effort to bring the pub to life by organising live music events and as a result, The Travellers Rest has quickly become popular among the surrounding communities. Darren Lewarne says the funding help natwest gave the couple reflects the bank’s determination to help new businesses. "At NatWest we’re providing new loans to over 4,000 businesses a week" he explains, "and currently opening around 2,000 start-up accounts per week for customers like Lucie and Nathan".

Darren, our NatWest relationship manager has been fantastic, he visits us regularly and has provided sound guidance – it was really important that we found someone who was both local and enthusiastic about the business
