• Always keep cheques in a secure place separate from the bank mandate.
• Undertake cheque stock audits regularly, including making sure that none have been removed from the middle or towards the back of the book.
• Use cheques in serial number order.
• Always follow best practice when completing cheques.
• Compare underlying paperwork for all cheques you issue.
• Undertake regular reconciliation of your account(s) and immediately report any unusual transactions to your bank. Segregate responsibility for issuing and reconciling cheques.
• Consider replacing cheque payments with faster, more secure electronic payment methods.
